Brainspotting Therapy in Marion, IN

You've tried to work through it. Maybe you've talked about it until the words ran dry. But something still feels stuck, lodged somewhere deep that talking doesn't quite reach.

That's not a failure on your part. It's actually how trauma works. Some experiences get stored in the body and brain in a way that conversation alone can't fully unlock. That's exactly where Brainspotting comes in.

At Mackee Counseling, our therapists are trained in Brainspotting, a powerful, neuroscience-informed approach that helps you process and release what's been held in your nervous system, often without having to relive every detail of what happened.

Brainspotting Therapy in Marion, IN

What Is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a trauma-focused therapy developed in 2003 by psychotherapist David Grand. It's built on a simple but profound principle: where you look affects how you feel.

During a Brainspotting session, your therapist helps you identify a specific eye position, called a "brainspot," that connects to a stored emotional or traumatic experience. Holding that gaze, while staying attuned to what's happening in your body, allows your brain to access and process experiences that are held below the level of conscious thought.

Think of it this way: your brain stores certain memories and emotions in areas that can't be reached through talking alone, particularly the subcortical brain, the region tied to emotion, memory, and regulation. Brainspotting works directly with those areas to support real, lasting healing.

Most people are familiar with talk therapy, and it's genuinely helpful for a lot of things. But trauma doesn't always live where words can find it.

Here's how Brainspotting compares to other approaches:

How Is Brainspotting Different From Other Therapies?

Talk Therapy EMDR Brainspotting
Requires verbal processing? Yes Partially No
Works with body sensations? Sometimes Yes Yes
Targets subcortical brain? No Yes Yes
Needs detailed trauma retelling? Often Sometimes No
Session pace Therapist-guided Structured protocol Client-led

Brainspotting tends to be especially useful when:

  • Talk therapy has helped, but something still feels unresolved

  • Putting the experience into words feels impossible or too overwhelming

  • Previous therapy felt "too intense" or re-traumatizing

  • You want a gentler, body-informed approach

It also pairs well with EMDR and talk therapy, many clients use Brainspotting alongside other approaches to move through layers of healing at their own pace. At Mackee Counseling, we offer both Brainspotting and EMDR as part of our trauma-informed care.

What Happens in a Brainspotting Session?

Sessions are calm, intentional, and led by your nervous system, not a script.

Here's what a typical Brainspotting session looks like at Mackee Counseling:

1. Check-in. Your therapist will take a few minutes to connect with you, ask how you're feeling, and set an intention for the session. There's no pressure to come in with a plan.

2. Tuning in to your body. Your therapist will guide you to notice a body sensation, maybe a tightness in your chest, a heaviness in your shoulders, or a feeling you can't quite name. This becomes your anchor for the session.

3. Finding the brainspot. Using a pointer or simply guiding your gaze, your therapist helps you locate the eye position that feels most connected to what you're holding. You'll know it when you find it, it's usually a subtle but noticeable shift.

4. Processing. You hold that gaze while your brain does the work. Your therapist stays attuned and present, often using bilateral sound through headphones to support deeper processing. You don't have to say much. You don't have to explain what's happening. Your brain knows what to do.

5. Integration. At the end of the session, your therapist will help you ground and close in a way that feels stable and safe. You'll have space to share anything that came up or not. It's entirely up to you.

Sessions typically last 50–60 minutes. Some clients notice significant shifts in a single session. For others, healing unfolds more gradually. Either way is completely normal.

What Can Brainspotting Help With?

Brainspotting is a versatile, evidence-informed approach that can support healing across a wide range of experiences, including the following:

  • Trauma and PTSD, childhood trauma, relational trauma, complex PTSD, single-incident trauma

  • Anxiety and panic, including generalized anxiety, social anxiety, and anxiety rooted in past experiences

  • Depression, especially depression linked to grief, loss, or unresolved painful experiences

  • Grief and loss, the loss of a loved one, a relationship, a sense of identity, or a life that could have been

  • Phobias and fears, including medical, social, and situational fears

  • Relationship challenges, including attachment wounds and difficulty trusting others

  • Performance anxiety, for athletes, artists, and professionals who want to remove internal blocks

  • Anger and emotional dysregulation, when emotions feel bigger than the situation seems to warrant

You don't have to have a "big T" trauma to benefit from Brainspotting. If something is stuck and you can't think your way out of it, this approach is worth exploring.

Who Is Brainspotting For?

Brainspotting is a good fit for many people, including adults, adolescents, and even children in some cases. It's particularly well-suited for people who:

  • Have struggled to make progress in traditional talk therapy

  • Feel they "don't know how to talk about it" or "can't find the words."

  • Carry physical symptoms connected to emotional stress (tension, chronic pain, fatigue)

  • Are highly sensitive or have described feeling things more intensely than others

  • Want to process trauma without full verbal disclosure

It's also available via telehealth, so if you're located anywhere in Indiana, you can access Brainspotting sessions from your own space.

Frequently Asked Questions About Brainspotting

  • Brainspotting is most commonly used to treat trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, grief, phobias, and emotional dysregulation. It can also be helpful for performance issues, attachment wounds, and chronic stress, essentially anything stored in the body that doesn't fully resolve through talking.

  • Yes. Brainspotting is a neuroscience-informed approach with a growing body of research supporting its effectiveness, particularly for trauma and PTSD. It's based on the brain-body connection and how the subcortical brain stores and processes emotional experience.

  • It depends on the person and what they're working through. Some clients experience meaningful shifts in just a few sessions. Others work through deeper layers over several months. We collaborate with every client to find a pace that works for them; there's no set number required.

  • No. Brainspotting is specifically designed for experiences that are hard to put into words. You can share as much or as little as you choose. The processing happens at the level of the nervous system, not through verbal retelling.

  • Yes. Brainspotting translates well to telehealth. As long as you have a private, comfortable space and a stable internet connection, you can experience the full benefits of Brainspotting from home. We offer telehealth services across the state of Indiana.

  • Both Brainspotting and EMDR target trauma stored in the brain and nervous system, and both can produce deep healing. EMDR uses a structured bilateral stimulation protocol, while Brainspotting is more client-led and focuses on sustained eye position rather than tracking movement. Some clients respond better to one or the other, and some benefit from both. At Mackee Counseling, we offer both approaches and can help you figure out what fits.

  • Yes. Brainspotting can be adapted for younger clients, often in combination with play therapy or other child-centered approaches. Our team has experience working with children and teens using trauma-informed modalities, including Brainspotting. Learn more about our child and teen therapy services.

  • The best way to find out is to talk to one of our therapists. During your initial intake, we'll get to know you, understand what you're dealing with, and make a recommendation based on your needs, history, and goals. There's no pressure; we're here to help you find the right fit.
