Carla Payne, FNP was born and raised in southwest Michigan and moved to Indiana in 1995. She attended Western Michigan University and Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis for prerequisite coursework. She transferred to the University of Indianapolis (U of I) where she completed her associate and bachelor's degrees in nursing. In 2009 she returned to U of I in the Family Nurse Practitioner track. Carla has been in the nursing field for over 20years. She is board certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP).
Out of necessity, while working in an FQHC as an FNP, her experience has grown more specialized to working in mental health treatment. She has experience in working in a variety of settings including outpatient office, assisted living facilities, residential facilities, and long-term care facilities. She was able to utilize this experience during the COVID-19 pandemic in the urgent care setting, the COVID-19 Hotline for the state of Indiana, and the National COVID-19 Vaccine Hotline, by managing teams of medical professionals helping others through difficult situations.
For the past year, she has had a sole focus on managing psychiatric patients in a variety of institutional and home settings. After learning of a large number of individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) losing their psychiatric care providers, she decided to step in and help. Due to her own personal experience with managing mental illness in a child with IDD, she made the decision to serve this population exclusively. IDD patients are complex and have a unique set of needs in their healthcare. It affects not just their mental health but also their physical health and a team approach is essential.
Carla sees patients at Mackee Counseling monthly or bi-monthly. When she is not here, she is able to see patients via telehealth.
